I recieved a gift from my favorite Aunt recently. She is at the age now (in her 90’s) and she called me over to go threw some things as she will be not living alone any longer. Among all the heirlooms was something she wanted me to havean old, Oriental Rug I hadn’t seen lately. It was rolled up and hidden away. Because of my friends at Oriental Rug cleaning company. I have been learning about the diversity of the different rugs, how they have been woven and for what purpose . And now I had received a rug from my aunt and she said her parents got from the orient. All I knew it was dirty, didn’t look like much of anything, but because she insisted on me taking it from the home she was moving from, I agreed and propmtly took it to my friends at Pride Carpet , also owned by my friend and where they have a cleaning facility along with Oriental Rug Cleaning. I would walk around looking at the variety of rugs in the cleaning process, I must say the Chinese Rugs I have seen are esquisit!

So I lug this rug over to the warehouse, (not only Pride Carpet Cleaning and Oriental Rug Care are housed, but also Colonial Floor Care, my friends that had helped my husband and I with our rental rennovation Terrazzo, concrete, and soon to redo the garage…but that is for another day.) So I bring my rug there, and by golly! It sure was a Chinese made rug, from the early 1900’s, In the 1920’s and 30’s many rugs in a vaguely Art Deco style I found out that these rugs were Hand Woven, but produced for the American market in rug “factories” in Hebel and Shandong provinces. Although rugs were woven by hand, the workshops were highly organized with, foreign companies controlling all phases of the production.

Many rugs from this period had plain grounds of pearl grey or navy with wide solid-color borders and simple floral spray design elements. hWhich is exactly what this rug looked like. So I had them hand wash it, and because the fringe was in terrible condition I then replicate the fringe and replace it also. When I brought the rug home, it was just beautiful. I almost didn’t want to step on it, but it had taken a beating for almost 100 years, as this rug was purchased when my Aunt was a child and her father was stationed around that area and they traveled. So it had been in the family for almost 80 years.

So getting back to Brussels in Spring and another vacation desationtion for an upcoming vacation. While talking to the owner, he told me about this carpet they do every year with flowers! He showed me a quick look at some pictures he had so off I went to start looking into this. Doing my research on this distenation I found out that this festifull had been started by the Begonia growers in the area, Each year the carpet is different depending on the quality and quanity of these amazing blooms!. I could only gasp at the pictures. Now I wanted to go to there!

Comparing the actual carpet to the floral carpet. You can see where the weaver could get their inspirations.

The basic dissimilarity between a handmade, also known as hand-knitted rug and machine made rug, is that machine made rug does not have knots. The threads are put in knitting machines using machines only and then securing them using latex backing. So when touched, the back of the rug feels rough and forms a grid like appearance on the back side of the rug.

Hand knotted Persian rugs outlast the machine made rugs and last more than 50 years longer. In comparison to hand made rugs, machine made rugs lack originality, durability, charm, and potential money value. Initially, machine made rugs are pocket friendly but they fail in the replacement price offer, for example, last only for ten years to the maximum. In addition to this, inflation also contributes to the little resale value involved with machine made rugs. It is more practical to pay some extra amount and opt for hand made rugs. Even after ten years of use, a hand made rug may offer good resale value. Actually, they are considered to gain more value as they become old. Once a synthetic rug is bought, it does not hold any resale value.

History

Persia (now Iran) was once the most powerful and the oldest domain in the Middle East situated on the borders of Western and Eastern civilizations. Under Safavid Reign (1502 to 1736), Iran touched new heights of art. Court weaving, along with artistic calligraphy, tile work and miniature painting, flourished to extraordinary heights. Extremely qualified carpet manufacturing units developed in the cities of Kashan, Isfahan, Heart, Tabriz, and Kerman during this period. Today, Iran is considered as the hub of most of the patterns, traditional colorations, and motifs in the carpet industry all over the world. To summarize, Persian rugs are one of the priceless heirlooms that continue to be passed on from generations to generations.

Persian rugs and carpets are still an integral part of people’s life and culture in Iran. Indeed, for some, these rugs and carpets are considered the most treasured possession, and they also form an intrinsic part of their homes as well. Thus, it is not at all surprising to know that current levels of production all over Iran are the same as they were before the Islamic Revolution in 1979. In fact, now-a-days, rugs are being produced even in those areas as well where weaving was not in practice before. Till today, Persian rugs have maintained their superior quality and standard.

How are Persian Rugs Made

These types of carpets and rugs are made on looms. Looms are large wooden frames, with equal spaced pegs on parallel and long beams. Usually a horizontal flat surface has vertical loom over it. Next, in order to make a traditional design, you have to decide first the design of the border, background, centerpiece and other designs that spread all over the carpet. Once, you have decided the colors, you have to dye silk and wool threads accordingly. When every thing is ready needed to weave the rug, you can begin with weaving.

No one knows precisely when and where the technique of weaving first started, there is no doubt that the the art of weaving started in several area’s around the world and at different times. Using DNA Testing, weaving samples have been dated in Turkey to 7000 to 8000 BC. In those days, the migrating tribes, were exposed to severe weather conditions, and learned to use goat hair in the making of their tents. The name of Oriental Rug can be from weavers in what is considered the Orient produced by traditional methods in the ancient weaving regions of the Caucasus, Anatolia(Turkey), Persia (Iran), Afghanistan, Turkestan, Baluchistan,China, India, Pakistan, the Balkans and parts of North Africa. All with their own unique weaving methods.

Goat hair is longer and much sifter than sheep’s wool. The flat weave technique was used in the making of their tents. Just as a braided pony-tail, strands of the shorter and stiffer hair stick out of the braid, the goat hair sticks out of the weave , and when gets wet, these hairs then drops and partially cover the holes in the flat weave. Thus making the tent almost waterproof. These nomadic people would also help to keep themselves shielded using goat hair flat weave, to make a surface to protect them from the humidity and moisture that is present in the earthen floors of their tents. The very same techniques of flat weave to make floor coverings and called them “Kilims”. Most flat weave designs reflected the depictions of the worshiped symbols of those normadic’s beliefs. This was the first oriental rug. Used for flooring, bedding, coverings.

The art of weaving improved and many items useful in every day life were woven using this flat weave, for example: saddlebags for horses and camels that could be used in the transportation of many types of items. These woven kilims made with goat hair and used them as warm blankets because the fibers were so long. It’s thought that these early blanket were woven in imitation of actual animal felts. These types of blankets are used as the kilims as well as for cradles, with the corners tied to the overhead tent poles so that the cradle could be swung back and forth to rock the babies to sleep.

Based on the evolution and the part of the world the weaving was being done, many types of woven products improved over time with additional uses developed. At first the nomads, who strictly lived in tents, used the soft stacks as beds. Then in a further inspiration of using animal pelts as a model, the weavers started to add pile to the basic flat weaves. These first pile rugs were very supple; they would simply fold and throw them on a horse’s back or to be used as a sleeping bag during their long voyages.

None of us know exactly when and where the first knotted-pile carpets were woven. However, the oldest “surviving” pile carpets were discovered in the grave of a Scything Prince of the Altai Mountains In1947 in Siberia, by Russian archeologists and are presently displayed in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. The carpet was woven with the Turkish double knot and contains a surprising 347.000 knots per square meter (255 per square inch); it is 3.62 square meters (6 x 6.5 feet) and has been carbon dated to have been from the 5th. Century B.C. It was loaded and subsequently flooded and froze to await discovery by Redneck. The Pazirik (or Altai) carpet, , is rather sophisticated, thereby showing that it is the product of a long history and tradition of weaving.

Don’t worry when you find spills are everywhere on your carpet and you know that everyone notices it. If there are any children in the family, the family will worry about the carpet. They are always looking for tips they can use to clean their carpets and remove stains to keep their home looking clean. There is no way to get around the fact that children and spills seem to go hand-in-hand.

Always read the directions first when you are planning to use any commercial carpet cleaning product. You’ll find that most of the general carpet cleaner are not recommended for spot cleaning. There are some special spot cleaner for different types of spill.

If you have a carpet, and someone accidentally spills a container of wine, soda, coffee, or beer. Immediately blot the area with paper towels or rags to remove all the liquid you can. Then mix a solution of one-quarter cup of white vinegar and three quarters of a cup of water. Soak the spot with this mixture, and then blot the area to remove all traces of moisture.

If the fruit juice is spilled over on your carpet, you want to blot up the extra liquid or use a wet vacuum on it if you have one. Once the juice has dried, re-saturate it with a half-teaspoon of dish soap mixed a quart of water. Apply this to the spot, and blot well. Reapply the solution if necessary. After you’ve completely removed the stain you can rinse the area with clean water and blot dry.

If you have children, they may get sick and vomit on the carpet. Start cleaning one by one. First, blot the area. Then mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia and three quarters cup of cold water in a spray bottle, and thoroughly saturate the stained area. After spraying, blot the moisture away. Re-spray if necessary. This method will also work on ketchup stains and any acidic type stain.

Children may also stained the carpet with paint or crayons. Again blotting is the best policy. Then use a white cloth or cotton ball soaked in alcohol and blot some more. Repeat if it is needed. Just be sure that the moisture stays above the carpet backing. After you’ve blotted up the alcohol, mix a quart of water with a half-teaspoon of dish soap. Apply a little of this to the spot and blot dry.

If the areas are too large you may need professional help, and Pride Carpet Cleaning is always here to help.

Use carpet-cleaning solutions that will be the best for the size and type of stain. Home made or store bought solutions are suitable for the precious carpet. Different types of carpet fibers react differently to each product, so find out what is safe to use on your carpets.

Cleaning carpet stain is not easy process. Consult with professionals if needed. If you want to keep it nice for a number of years, you need to take care of the stains as soon as they happen.

Sometimes it becomes very difficult to remove kool aid stains from carpet. All “red stains” are difficult to get out. It is used in pop, candy, and other foods generally are not easy to flush out with water. However, if you try the methods used by professional carpet cleaners like Oriental rug cleaners, pride carpet cleaning you may get that stain out.

Use soap- vacuum to suck some of the spill out, if you can remove it quickly. It helps to control the stain setting into the carpet fibers. Getting out some or all of the remaining stain takes time.

In addition, you can use the original blue type dish washing detergent. Mix it with five or six drops to two cups of warm water. With this solution dampen a white cotton cloth and place it down on the stain. Then place a clothes iron on top of it, set on “low”. Leave it on the area at least fifteen minute. You can see the red in the cloth. Fold it to use a clean part or apply a new cloth, and repeat the process.

It takes patience to get red stains out of carpet, but even year-old Kool Aid stains have been removed using this method. Repeat the process repeatedly until there is no more transfer of the red stain to the cloth. Rinse the spot with water, blot it up, and dry it quickly. Quick drying prevents any stain from becoming embedded deeper down into the carpet and to prevent the stain from wicking up to the surface.

Sometimes, accidentally water is spilled on the carpet and saturating the carpet. What can we do then? It’s still a pretty simple and straightforward process, only instead of a pile of wet towels you need to use a carpet water extractor.

There is various types of ways to get these machines;such as- rent one , buy one, or call a professional carpet water extraction service. Each of these methods will employ similar techniques, though keep in mind that for large jobs, especially if you have been a victim of flash flooding, it would be advisable to call a professional service to properly dry and sanitize your carpets.

The carpet water extractor is similarly a wet dry vacuum with a flexible wand attached for maximum concentration of suction into small areas of carpet. The water starts coming out of the carpet and depositing into the machine, when the head of the wand is placed directly onto the wet surface of the carpet. The operator moves the wand across the affected areas of the carpet, making sure to use slow, methodical movements in order to assure a thorough job. The job of extraction is not completed until no more water is being suctioned into the machine. It is at this point that it may be desirable to place a fan or two around the affected area to speed drying of the carpet fibers, especially if the carpet has been wet for quite some time.

When the carpet gets wet for as extended period of time, and saturated by many gallons of water, or has been exposed to flood water, then call a professional to drying the carpet.
For industrial uses, there are two common carpet-cleaning methods. Many diseases can be caused by dirty carpets, it also is the dwelling place of germs and bacteria. Maintaining for clean and healthy carpet is needed. The method is differerent each type of the carpet.

The two methods are :

1) Dry cleaning method

2) Wet cleaning method

1) The dry cleaning method doesn’t include moisture with it. It involves specialized machines and cleaning solutions to clean the carpet. Therefore, the carpet dries faster. It is also faster than any other method of carpet cleaning.

There are various types of carpet cleaning methods we found in the market. One is by using special foam that stays in your carpet. When it is dry, the foam is vacuuming up.
Other is ‘the bonnet method’. In this method, the cleaning product is misted on the carpet, and then a rotating buffer and a pad wherein the contaminant attaches itself absorbs it.

This method has the advantage of drying very quickly because of the small amount of moisture used. It is debatable because a person asks if all residues can be extracted.

2) The next methods is very slow process for drying the carpet. It has some risk to get some molds, mildew, odors, bacteria, and even discoloration. However, there are cleaning services that have mastered this method. Pride carpet cleaning is one of those companies.

Steam cleaning or hot water extraction uses a combination of high water pressure and hot water. Therefore, a hot cleaning solution is sprayed on the carpet then it is immediately extracted by a vacuum source.

It has some advantage, to remove large amount of dirt, soil, and other contaminants.
The advantage of this system is that it can remove large amount of dirt, soil, and other contaminants. Nevertheless, it takes approximately 3 – 4 hours of drying time. It is the most recommended cleaning method because the high heat can kill molds, fungus, and bacteria.
