Tabriz has a rich prominence in poetry and literature. The
folk songs of Tabriz are extremely popular and Tabriz features
strongly in Persian
literature. These influences also lend themselves in the design
of the rugs. The dyeing of the yarn is done naturally, usually
using plant dyes. Deep blue and dark red are the typical colors
associated with Tabriz carpets. Beige and pink are also commonly
used.
While talking about Tabriz carpets, a frequent word used
is Raj. Raj is an ancient Persian
unit of measurement. It is the Persian equivalent of Knots
per Square Inch (KPSI).
It requires a high level of expertise to make rugs that have
a high knot density. Thus, the more the knots, the better
the carpet is usually. The knot density is visible on the back
of the carpet. The price of the carpet increases in direct
proportion to the knot density. The materials used to make
the Tabriz rugs are usually wool, silk or even a mixture of
the two. In the finest of Tabriz rugs, the foundation is pure
silk instead of cotton and sometimes, it has 18 or 24-carat
gold threads woven into it.
The characteristic of the rugs is their regular weave. They
have a closely woven texture. The warp and the weft of the
Tabriz rugs are cotton. The weavers usually do not dye the
wefts and warps of the Tabriz rug. However, sometimes the
wefts could be light gray or pale blue. Tabriz carpet weavers
cut the pile very short. This gives the rug a rough feel,
besides making it tough. The carpet weavers double welt the
Tabriz rugs. They usually use the Turkish symmetrical knot,
but the Persian knot may also be used. The Tabriz rug is a
fine specimen of the expertise of the carpet weavers of Tabriz.
Owing to the skill required to make a good Tabriz carpet,
mainly expert weavers who artfully make the rug. As a result,
the price of a Tabriz rug may be one of the more expensive.
However, certain affordable carpets are also available.
