Qoltuq is the name of the village in Kurdestan. The weather
is mild in summer and dry and cold in winter. Qoltuq rugs
use the Turkish knots symmetrically and double wefted thus
these rugs are heavy and very durable.
These rugs generally have all over recurring Herati designs
in addition to Arabesques, medallions and flowery designs.
These rugs are considered as the best oriental rugs for daily
use since they are tremendously strong and rigid.
Warp is generally of cotton, occasionally goat's wool. The weft
is also cotton and both weft and warp are tightly spun. In ancient
pieces, wefts and warps are of wool. Pile is a very dense and
hard cut medium to high.
Weavers frequently use Turkish
knots, however, in some cases Persian
knots can be found. Very often, dark blue and strong red
colors predominate in these rugs. However, yellow and brown
are also used and very rarely green is also used.
Qoltuq rugs can be found in various sizes especially from 1.50m
upwards. Big pieces of above 12 sq. meters are also widespread.
The beautiful Qoltuq rugs are not only suited with traditional
furniture, they marvelously harmonize contemporary and fashionable
furniture too. These rugs are very famous and are in a high
demand.
