Malayer
carpets and rugs are known for their nomadic patterns.
Usually Herati designs are used in the pattern of these
rugs.
Malayer is situated northwest of the city Arak,
approx 90 km southeast of Hamadan and about 400 km southwest
of Tehran. Malayer region is well-known for manufacturing
fine tribal rugs. The city was previously named Dowlatabad
and it was named Malayer in the Qazar period.
Malayer rugs are available in different qualities in market.
Although most of the Malayer rugs are good but some are of poor
quality also.
Soft and high quality wool is used in the making of these rugs.
The pile is thin and tight. Warp is often cotton while weft
is either wool or cotton. They normally create single wefted
rugs which are normally much better than those of Hamadan. In
Malayer, weavers use Turkish
knots which averages about 120 KPSI.
Red color is predominantly used in different shades in these
rugs. These rugs are available in various sizes but the most
of them fluctuate between 4x6 feet to 8x10 feet.
In villages and towns nearby Malayer, carpets are of better-quality,
double wefted and bear a resemblance to the patterns of Sarouks
prepared in the nearby Arak region with symmetrical knots.
