Kazvin in Northern Persia was a well-known center of carpet weaving. Situated 90 miles to the west of Tehran, Kazvin no longer produces rugs commercially today. In fact, the last production was between 1930 and 1935. Along with carpet weaving, the major occupations of the people in Kazvin include tile making, mirror making, calligraphy, embossed plaster design and engraved wood works.

There are some rugs made in surrounding villages that sell as Kazvin rugs. They usually feature tribal patterns. True Kazvin rugs feature curvilinear patterns. Their designs are very similar to those of the Bijar and Kashan rugs.The colors used in Kazvin rugs are blue and dark reds, much like many other Persian carpets. Ivory provides a lovely contrast to these dark colors. Most Kazvin carpets are available in the mid-size, though other sizes are also available.

The Kazvin carpet weavers use soft wool for making these rugs. The pile is usually thin and tight. Like many other rugs, the warps are made of cotton, while the wefts are either cotton or wool.

Kazvin carpet weavers use both, the Turkish as well as the Persian knots for making the Kazvin carpets. Thus, the inspection of the rug is important. Older Kazvin carpets are usually better in quality than the later ones.

With an average of 40 Raj and their antiquity, these carpets are quite valuable.
