Farahan region is located in Markazi in the center of Iran.
There is a big demand of ancient Farahan rugs in the West.
A big number of these rugs possess a geometrical pattern
even though a few curvilinear rugs are also woven in the
region.
There are two types of Farahan rugs knitted in the region.
The first type features an allover design, typically a continuous
recurrence with designs for instance the gul hannai, herati
or mina-khani. Since Herati is the most famous design and
has many deviations, it is most commonly woven within hexagon-shape
sections. The second type features the medallion design.
These medallions come in the shapes of diamond, hexagon
or oval with big pendants. In this two designs are commonly
used that are gul hannai and herati.
These rugs are prepared from fine quality wool, slim and
taut pile with the Persian knots. These knots fluctuate
from 120 KPSI to 475 KPSI. The quality of a rug relies on
the total number of knots.
A very popular medallion design features a large spherical
notched medallion alike to glowing sun; this design has
got the recognition in the rug industry as sunburst. The
design of the core medallion is copied in each corner of
the rug, intermittent by the border.
