Different
Types of Knots :
|
There are various types of knots used in the process of making
rugs. The type of knot used sometimes determines the strength
and durability of the rug made. The value of an Oriental
rug is often the result of its knot count. The denser
the knot count, the more valuable the rug. Thus, knots play
a very important role in the value of a rug. In addition,
the kind of knot employed gives an idea regarding the type
of carpet made. Some carpets extensively use only one type
of knot, while others might use one knot
in the majority of carpets made. The most common knots used
are the symmetrical and the asymmetrical knots. Besides these,
we also have the Jufti knot,
Spanish knot and Tibetan
knot.

Ghiordes
Knot:
|
The
Ghiordes knot or the single knot, symmetrical knot and Turkish
knot, is among the most commonly used knots in the making
of carpets. The weaver passes the knot between two adjacent
warps. He then, brings it back underneath one. After wrapping
them around both the warps to form a collar, he pulls them
through the center. Both ends of the yarn come from between
the same warps.

|
Senneh
Knot:
|
The
Senneh knot or the double knot, asymmetrical knot and Persian
knot, is another commonly used knot. The weaver wraps the
yarn only around one warp. He passes the yarn under the
next warp and leaves it open, so that a single warp separates
the ends of the yarn. The yarn might be open on the left
side or the right side. This is the reason why people also
refer to the Senneh knot as the asymmetrical knot.
